"Ryobi "bare tool" items are a good deal when you already have batteries" 2009-03-30

The whole idea behind Ryobi selling their tools without batteries is so that people who already have batteries and chargers can buy additional tools without having to also buy even more batteries, which they don't need. Makes perfect sense to me, and I like that they do that. It's not a bait and switch tactic as one reviewer referred to it. A lot of people already have a drill that came with batteries and charger, and so buying additional "bare tools" is the smartest way to go. FYI: the best deal on tools are the combo kits. Ryobi makes great tools!

I purchased the set with the reciprocating saw, drill, flashlight, and circular saw. It came with a charger, two batteries, and a large carry bag. I added a couple extra batteries for $47 and plan to add a second charger for $29. I bought all my stuff from Home Depot.

I built a couple large birdhouses yesterday using 1 X 12 pine. The circular saw is definitely not your typical powerful corded Skil saw, but it did fine in the 1" soft wood and it is very light and handy. I made a dozen super clean 12 inch cuts, sunk several dozen 1.5 inch wood screws, and cut a couple 1.5 inch and a couple .75 inch holes with spade bits, all on one battery. Still had juice left, but I switched out to another battery to finish the job.

Also used the drill on a small job at the neighbor's house. He had some stripped out screws holding a small safe to the wall. When we couldn't get the screw-out tools to pull the screws, I just threw in a carbide bit and drilled the heads right off the screws. Lots of power, very quick and easy.

I compared the price of batteries, chargers, etc... and found that this Ryobi series of tools is much more reasonably priced than other brands. For example, one DeWalt 18 volt battery is nearly $70. Two Ryobi 18 volt batteries are $47 and change. I realize we can get into a Chevy vs. Ford discussion, but for me, these Ryobi tools are a great choice for the homeowner looking for good tools at a decent price.

I made the mistake of purchasing the cordless sander One + of Ryobi. These products look inexpesive on the web when you buy them, but Ryobi does not make readily available the battery or power charger as a separate purchase. If you buy one of these without the battery or charger, you'll find you're paying 3 times as much just to get the equipment to make it work.

Ryobi seems to have mastsered the bait and switch tactic. I would steer clear.

"Very Poor Condition tools" 2010-09-11

I gave it one star as I didn't see any way to give 0 stars. The tools were not as described. Drill was earlier model than stated and in very poor condition, dirty and beaten up. Certainly not in 'like new condition' as claimed. The saw was in good shape and like new. Batteries looked new but would not hold charge. Also package contained a reciprocating saw which was in as bad a shape as the drill and a flash light in equally poor condition. These two items were not included in the ZRP824 that was ordered but were included in the shipment. The carry bag had a tear in the side, probably due to the poor packing. The tools were just placed in the bag without any packing material. The bag was then placed in a cardboard box without packing and then an outer shipping box with a couple of pieces of brown paper. All labeling on the package matched my order, but contents were for a different kit. I have bought many Factory-Reconditioned tools in the past, including 18Volt Ryobi kits, and all have been as represented. This purchase was totally unacceptable and I returned it within 24 hrs of receipt. Amazon handled the return efficiently and well so I have no complaints there. The items supplied however, were used and abused, with the exception of the saw. I recommend caution in purchases of any Factory-Reconditioned items from this source.

bought these a couple of years ago. Drill performed well except heavy and bits tend to fall out (noted by other reviewers) and the saw is borderline useless. Okay for 2x4's but that's about it. Just not enough power. For cordless drill take a look at Dewalt's DW920K. Bought it and love it.

From my experiences of factory reconditioned product, these tools were far from acceptable. Factory reconditioned means restored or maintained like new condition. However these Ryobi Tools I received looked more like something from a garage sale. The tools where dropped in a utility bag, within an empty box, within a larger empty box without much of shipping protection. There were no retail packagings, just dropped in a dirty bag. Unzipping the dirty bag, taking out the tools that were scuffed up, grinded chuck, beat up housing, and with rusty tools bits and blades in a ripped zip-lock pouch, these tools do not look like factory reconditioned, instead they look like they have been used and abused for years. Personally, I didn't bother to turn on the machine. The combined dirty bag was returned immediately. The sellers need to gain more integrity and common humanity than trying the push these trashes as factory reconditioned products for quick profit. I'm extremely disappointed with Amazon.com, Mowtownusa, and Ryobi brand with my unfortunate experience.

I needed a replacement cordless drill for one the died and didn't feel like paying top dollar for one of the big name models but wanted the power of 18 volt. When I came across this combo on Amazon I recognized it would be a real plus to have the saw along with the needed drill. I figured I would take the risk on a reconditioned model to see what kind of performance I would get. OMG this set does as good as the higher priced models without a hitch. I like the fact that the batteries work in both tools interchangeably and charge quickly. I did a yard project repairing some broken fence boards as a first trial and found the saw very useful and the drill performed equally well. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to buy this combo again or recommend it to a friend.

I bought the autoshift drill kit.The larger battery was bad from the start and the entire kit is in a Ryobi service center a month after I got it.I was very unhappy that the kit was not right but I was happy that CPO Ryobi says they will take it back when it comes out of the service center.If I had known about their guarantee I would not have taken it to the service center.I have not had a chance to use it so I can't say if it is good or bad when it works.

Bought this exact kit from Home Depot on clearance for 99. Drill is great and lithium batteries charge very fast and last long. Rated 4 stars as the larger battery died after very little use (probably less than 20 mins). I mainly used the smaller battery as there is a notable difference in the weight of the drill with the bigger battery. Fortunately HD believed me and replaced the battery.

I LOVE Ryobi One Plus. I own almost all of the one plus tools and have 8 charger bases with batteries always ready to go.

As a Handyman Contractor, I do many types of work. I look for tools that are versatile and hold up to a lot of abuse. Ryobi one-plus meets those criterion.

I ordered the auto shift drill mainly for the batteries. When I have a bad battery or two, I find it is less expensive to order a drill kit (with 2 new batteries & a charger) than it is to just buy new batteries. Although I now have several Ryobi 18V drills, this Autoshift has become my favorite.

The only reasons it gets four stars instead of 5 is that it is a little heavy for prolonged use and although the LiIon Batteries are light years ahead of the NiCads, the Ryobi Batteries seem to go bad quicker than the Dewalt 18V LiIons that I also use.

I like this combo kit. I use these tools for set building, and switch them all day. I use the drill a lot, but granted, I don't use anything continuously all day. The drill is great, usually the torque autoshift is just convenient and faster, but sometimes it would be nice to start manually downshifted, though pulling the trigger just a little fits the bill. The trigger though has too long of a pull before it activates. The magnetic screw holder is a lifesaver. This tool is heavier and less torquey than the big names, but does everything I've needed... anything else would be a job for a more powerful tool in the first place. The saws are both totally awesome, especially the circular. The safeties are a slightly annoying feature... come on, these are power tools, they are inherently unsafe, and no safety will stop a fool from hurting himself! Ryobi is the only brand to include this (ironically, what looks like a safety in other brands actually locks the saw trigger in place). The light is great, though for at least the past three years no light can be excused for not being an LED, and it's not. Does Ryobi, or most of the other manufacturers for that matter, think we failed to notice the rapid proliferation of these lights? The batteries are great... these lithium tools are better than any NiCads of any brand. And the fact that they slap in instead of slide on like Makita or Milwaukee is far easier. I appreciate that the batteries are backwards compatible to previous tools... though I wish they would hurry up and make everything this green color so all my future stuff would match! The charge level button on the battery is so cool and useful, though it isn't present on the compact one. I would rather have had two large batteries, though I appreciate a lighter battery once in a while.

I was worried about buying this kit, some people bag on Ryobi tools because they're cheaper... but they work fantastic! Bottom line is that I could not have afforded most brands of combo kit, and I needed tools! I gave them a shot, as they were warranted, and these tools work very well... they've made me an independent force to be reckoned with! I'll be looking into the power paint backpack system soon. Thanks, Ryobi, you're helping me work like a pro even though I'm just starting out.

Really like this little drill. Has lots of power and is very light. It replaces my 14.4 Bosch nicad drill. The batteries are starting to go bad. Instead of buying new batteries for the Bosch, I purched this Ryobi instead. Its a great deal, 2- 12V lithium batteries,a charger and a drill for $67.00. The Ryobi is about half the weight of the Bosch. If a battery goes bad on the Ryobi, I will just buy another reconditioned drill for $67.00.

I'll keep this short. My 1/2" corded hammer drill and 15 amp Sawzall are from Bosch. I wanted a compact cordless 3/8" drill/driver for a carry-anywhere tool. The Bosch alternatives were far too expensive. $200 for a drill and $150 for the drill/driver that just didn't have the torque or rpm's I needed.

I looked at the Milwaukee and Dewalt units. Same story. Way too expensive for a throw-around tool and the drill/driver units just weren't fast or strong enough.

I looked at the cheaper units (Ryobi, Black and Decker, Toolshop, etc.) and found that the lightest and most compact of the 3/8" drills was the Ryobi 12V Lithium Ion. Better yet, it came with two batteries and a charger.

I bought the package, came home, and immediately plugged the battery into the charger. The charger's a pretty nice little unit - it flashes red while testing the battery to see if it's in good operating condition. If it is, it flashes green while charging and stays solid green when fully charged. 40 minutes later, no kidding, the first battery is charged. I slap it into the drill and put the second battery in the charger.

I've only used the unit for the last few days, but it's been an invaluable little tool. Very lightweight, it holsters easily (even in a jeans pocket). The batteries are very compact and show little sign of slowing down even after some pretty gnarly use (drilling through 1/4" stainless steel, etc.)

I give this a tool a 4, simply because for its price range, it is just great. Cheap, charges fast, holds a charge, and comes with a charger and two batteries.

I would give this tool a 5 if it came with ambidextrous belt-clips mounted on the tool and if the tool was even more compact and/or lighter.

I was in the middle of a project when my old drill died, which was a 3/8" Craftsman cordless. When I looked around for a comparable drill, I found that they have gotten pretty pricey. This Ryobi caught my eye. The company has a good reputation, and because I only use the drill a few times a year, I thought a reconditioned one would serve my needs. I ordered it from Amazon on Feb. 24, 2010 and it was delivered by FedX on Feb 26. Certainly prompt service, but I am in a state adjacent to Georgia where it was shipped from. I unpacked it and found that it was in a carrying case. I read the manual for the drill and charger. The manuals were new, printed for reconditioned units. I unpacked the battery, charger and drill, which had the 2nd battery attached. I tried to operate the drill but there was no response. I put the battery on the charger, and after a minute or two, the flashing light indicators indicated that the battery was defective. It would not charge. I charged the remaining battery and it charged fine. The drill then operated.

Before doing anything, I contacted CPORyobi support and the email response says they have submitted my request for a replacement battery to the factory. If I do not hear anything within 10 days, get back in touch. Consequently, me and my project are on hold. I read the fine print in CPO's return policy, and it says UNUSED items can e returned within 30 days for a refund. I am a patient guy, but my project is waiting. If I do not get a good battery within 10 days, I am going to get a refund and go to Lowes and buy a new one

This does bring up an issue I had not thought about. These units have been used, including the batteries, and you do not know how much life is left in them. New ones cost about the same as this drill, and that would double the cost of this bargain. I will update this review if and when the battery problem is resolved and I can actually try out the drill.

This is a March 10, 2010 update:

I received a replacement battery from the manufacturer today. I gave the drill a test run drilling a 1/4" inch hole in a 1/8" thick aluminum strip, and it worked fine, It is a light, nicely balanced basic drill, and should be adequate for my needs. I hope I get a few years out of it. CPO Ryobi lived up to their word.

Purchased new at Home Depot. No this review is not for the re-conditioned model. This is the one that SHOULD be re-conditioned, I guess. Wont hold a charge after use. Fully charged and not even used, the thing is dead as a doornail after sitting idle for 2 or three days. I googled this drill for user reviews. All I could find were two pages of new or re-conditioned batteries for sale...galore! My first Ryobi purchase. So much for that.Gonna see if I can get a different one and exchange it. I had a different and lighter type Drill/Driver before and it didn't hold up long using it for D.I.Y. work around the home, so when it gave out I ordered the Ryobi and it has enough power to do all the drilling I need to do. Since it was Factory Reconditioned it did not have screw driver and drill bit set with it, but I had a good one left from the bad unit. It is just like a new unit and didn't have a worn place or any mark on it. The keyless chuck is very easy to use and holds the bits and drills securely, without wobble or coming loose. I usually don't order reconditioned tools, but I didn't make a mistake with this one.

This is a mid-range tool, and I mean no insult by that. Some people have hands big enough to wrap around a heavy handle, but my wife has a more delicate build. Some people have enough strength that the mass of a high-energy, high-power battery is an acceptable load, but her strength isn't in her hands. And some people have major construction tasks, big repairs, and who-knows-what to drive a drill or screw into next. She has just the usual household fixit work to deal with, or maybe a bit more than some households.

She's always shied away from the beefier power tools, and I respect her evaluation of her control over that mechanical power. She's also ridiculed the little, wimpy 1.8V screwdrivers. It took a bit for her to make friends with this model, but she did. Now, I can't get near it. Remember those seagulls in "Finding Nemo", with the mine-mine-mine? That's her with this cordless.

I've bought three of the 9.6V units so far: one for her, one for a niece just starting her own first fixup apartment, and one for my 80-ish parents. (I love my dad, but he has to be realistic now about how many horsepower of whirling blades he really ought to handle.) And, in most states, it costs less than a carton of cigarettes - and you'll still have it next week.

The pack of bits that comes with it is mostly complete, but not the most durable. You'll have one of each: straight, Philips, square-drive and Torx (each in a few sizes), some drill bits, and more. Don't expect them to last, although each one will give you modest service. Not to worry, you can get lots more of each kind of bit when you need them. The motor is what counts here, and especially the feel of it in your hand. Ladies, please step right up. It's not pink and it's not a girltool, but that's not what a strong woman wants. It's does real work like you do, it works hard like you do, and it may well fit your hand. Try it.

It's not the biggest, baddest thing on the block. Be real, though. If you're not Schwarzenegger, maybe you really want something better proportioned to your hand and strength. This is good for lots of people who have lots of important work to get done.

My old drill/driver batteries died and I found this cheaper than a new battery. This works great and I even like the little magnet bit holder at the bottom of the grip. Only the down side is the rpm seems to be low compared to my old Ryobi and this affects when you drill. Although I was able to build metal stud walls with this. Perfect for light DIY and OK for mid DIY.

I had an older Ryobi drill that I LOVED and used on everything for many years. I'm a home, fixer upper, not a contractor or certified anything. I went through a few batts and chargers, and finally, had to buy their new versions, because they didn't make batteries that would fit the older models.

Well, the newer batteries completely suck. You CANNOT charge a batt, and stick it in the box, and expect it to get you through a job a few weeks later. I had two fully charged batteries sitting in the case for about three weeks, and I couldn't drill through a single piece of thin (2-3mm) metal going through both batts. Totally unacceptable. 3 months, fine, batts lose charge, everyone knows. 3 weeks? Not good enough. Due to this, I have to keep a batt in the charger at all times. Period. It sucks, and isn't typical of the quality I came to expect with this brand.

If this was a store-brand, it would probably get 3-4 stars. Since it's ryobi, and due to the cost, it get's two stars.

If you buy one of these, you'll probably get the model that I returned.

What a deal! I was going to buy a new battery for my old 9.6V drill and when I found out I could buy a 12 volt complete system for less money than a new 9.6V costs I was blown away. This drill is one of the nicest cordless drills I've ever used. It's light enough not to fatigue my hand when using it over and over as a screw gun, but it packs a surprising amount of torque - enough to put a screw head entirely through a pine board if you don't turn down the torque. The battery seems to last forever on a single charge - I've used it for 3 or 4 hours to assemble a living room full of bookshelves, and also to build a workbench and a TV cart. And it comes with a spare battery just in case, plus some screw bits and a flashlight. My one complaint is the keyless chuck, which seems to be difficult to get quite tight enough on the round shaft of a small drill bit, but this seems to be common to a lot of keyless chuck designs and I would not hold it against this particular model. I definitely recommend this drill.

I bought this drill for all the little round the house repairs, and if I could find a way to use it on a daily basis, I would. I just love it. It's small, comfortable, light weight, and does everything you need it to. My contractor even comes looking for it on a regular basis, so it can't be too shabby :)

The torch was a real bonus - I originally figured it would be handy to have a spare torch, but I never expected the adjustable head to come in so handy! Set it on the floor (or wherever), adjust the head so its pointing where you need it, and presto - you have light AND both of your hands free!

Its a great combo, and I certainly cannot say enough good things about them.

I am a custom builder, I have been using this drill/driver for 7 years now. I own 6 of them including the original in the 3 different configurations over the years. As stated I do custom work to last a life time, I use little nails, mainly screws. I have driven thousands of screws (including 4") with this drill.....NOT ONE PROBLEM. Yes, I had one problem when the original got caught on a ladder and damaged the trigger switch, $12.64 later it was as good as new.

Lots of torque and light weight the perfect package......GET THIS ONE!!!

Negative points:

The Saw is underpowered. It has little torque. I sent mine to e-waste after a year of looking for a light enough job it could be used on. I couldn't.

The batteries do not have any markings as to their current capacity, so it is impossible to compare them to other similarly sized units. They appear to be heavy on casing, light on current capacity.

The Batteries are NOT LI-ION. They are low capacity but do have a long service life.

Positve:

The Drill is the best part of the set. It has smooth action for the price. It can take a beating. The chuck needs a bit of effort or it will loosen. For the price it is OK. It appears that most cordless drills are built in a similar manner to this model. The light works. The batteries are priced well. I once swore by makita power tools, dewalt and hitachi. For the price of one 18V makita drill I can get this set, and a spare drill and two more spare batteries if I find them on sale, which keeps me working anyway. It's inexpensive.

The +1 series can be upgraded with LiIon batteries for a price. The tools have held up for over three years, I might just buy the LiIon batteries next.

Nobody is discounting these units New, the Li-Ion batteries have not been discounted at any store locally since they appeared.

I bought this set months ago, when I was really only looking for a cordless drill. I didn't think I would need the sabre saw or the circular saw, and honestly I could have survived without them. But all the items are superb tools, and for the cost of a good drill, you get a great drill and three other great tools. The only drawback is one of the two batteries supplied is poor at holding a charge. For home use these batteries--even the bad one--are OK. For heavy commercial use, the whole set would be excellent but for the batteries. I suspect that poor batteries are the reason such great tools are available for such a low price. If better (longer lasting) batteries are available, they would make this an absolutely unbeatable set.

I have purchased reconditioned Ryobi products before, so I was confident with this purchase. I recently used it to drill into a concrete sidewalk to install metal braces for a mailbox. It actually worked smoother than a corded DeWalt that I had used in the past. Good battery life (battery & charger purchased separately). The handle and depth rod are easily removed for regular drilling, but I leave the handle on for extra support. I highly recommend this drill, especially if you already have 18V Ryobi product(s) with the charger & battery.

Please don't buy this drill, so I can buy all of them, lol. In all seriouness this drill is great. I saw a magazine review where they put the non-compact version of this drill up against 5 other big name drills, and it won. It was an intensive test where the Craftsman drill caught on fire, but the Ryobi didn't break a sweat. Also it drilled through a lock in half the time as a Milwaukee.

There is a huge quality difference between the cheap blue and yellow Ryobi's versus the sweet looking lime-green Ryobi's. Spend the extra dough, and get the green tools instead. They will last you a long time.

The latest craze is to be an Apple fanboy. Well Apple screwed me to the tune of $4,000, so I decided to become a Ryobi fanboy instead. Tim Allen should ditch his Binsfords and get Ryobis instead :-)

At this price, you would be crazy not to buy it.

"Solid Performer Worth the Extra Few Dollars" 2010-06-04

I spent a lot of time mulling over my options before picking up the Ryobi for work.

#1 on the list of considerations was the size of the unit, with it's compactness yet slightly longer neck making it the winning choice for staying stowed in my tool pouch with the handle out for easy no-look access as well as being small enough to place in my jeans pocket. I'm happy to report that it is working out well on both counts, being not to big to fit in my pocket, but large enough to stay put in tool belt.

#2 for consideration was torque. Unfortunately the packaging doesn't really tell you squat about how much torque this unit has, but for my purposes it has enough for 90% of what I do, driving deck screws up to 1-1/2" into siding without breaking a sweat. It will not handle #10 screws into un-piloted holes in solid fir for more than 3/4" or so, so this is not a heavy duty driver, but ideal for driving lots of smaller screws.

#3 is the solid construction. I have yet to drop it, but I fear more for damage to the surface it may strike than likely damage to the tool. It is well built and should last for many years.

#4 is the lithium battery. While 4V is really not much to brag about over 3.8V in competing units, it makes the ones not using lithium batteries seem like a poor bet, offering significantly more capacity and longevity than Nickel based rechargeables.

#5 was the direction selector. This was the one point that gave me reservations about purchasing the unit. The selector is dead in the middle of where the thumb and index finger grip it most comfortably. Being RIGHT handed, I have concluded that this is less of an issue than it seemed at first, as the forward position puts the selector flush under the index finger, allowing a more firm grip than when reversing - which typically does not require as much torque anyway. For left handed operation it may be less convenient. Regardless, I found it very easy to switch, lock, or maintain direction with only one hand on the tool - unlike one of the competing drivers which requires a second hand to switch direction.

#6 No other driver in this class has the clutch feature - which could actually come in very handy, as it does have enough torque to twist the heads off of smaller screws.

Other notes:

- While I would prefer to have a replaceable battery option, no other tool of this quality and price point has one, so you get what you get with that.

- I think this is a very handy tool that has all but replaced my standard #3 phillips, though the standard #4 screwdriver will have to remain in my pouch for the heavy stuff when I don't resort to my larger drill/driver.

- This driver is probably a poor choice for drilling of anything but the least demanding of holes due to the slow speed of it.

- A faster charger would be great, but a full charge will last through some pretty heavy use - particularly if one plugs it in during break times.

Casting the cons aside, you won't be disappointed with the performance of this tool for the money.

I work on industrial machinery and these machines have several panels that are secured with machine screws. Well, no more sore hands with a commomn screwdrier. Perfect size, small enough to put in a small tool bag. If you need speed, or high torque, you will need to find something bigger but, if you have the patience, this tool does the job. It would be better if it had a separate button or switch for the light because the light does not come on until you squeeze the trigger.

The screwdriver works fine. And it's great that it has a light to lead you to your work. But the light DOESN'T COME ON UNTIL THE SCREWDRIVER STARTS TURNING, so it's useless when trying to find the slot. Should have a trigger that can be pulled half way for light and then more for actual running.

I didn't have the grip problems mentioned by others. I suspect the reason is because I don't have large hands, so my thumb doesn't come anywhere near the reversing control. And although my trigger finger does rest lightly against the side of the reversing slide on the other side of the handle, that doesn't cause me any problem.

I'm 5' 8". A large person with large hands will undoubtedly find the grip to be a problem for them, as some have described.

I did buy the Ryobi accessory bit set for another $19.95. It has all of the drill bits, screwdriver heads, socket type ends, adapters, etc that you could possibly want - and all with the required hexagonal shank to fit this tool.

I bought it to install 2' Bali plantation blinds in all of the windows in my new house. I'll update this review after I've finished that job.

I cant speak for the factory reconditioned set, but I bought this same set new from a local big chain hardware store and have loved it ever since.... my one complaint is the circular saw is only 5 1/2 and can BARELY cut all the way through 2x4s... the light is so bright you can feel the heat from the beam a foot away... the drill has REALLY been put to use and only after building an entire jungle gym have I killed a battery all the way.... nice surprise was the unmentioned magnetic tray built into the drill for bits and screws. Great set for the average home tinkerer, but if you're just looking for discount construction tools, don't be butthurt when they cant keep up..... you get what you pay for.

"Ryobi 18v Drill/Driver and Circular Saw" 2010-02-16

I purchased the Ryobi Drill/driver and saw as part of a kit several years ago. The thing that interested me the most was the low price of the batteries compared to the DeWalts and Makitas. You can get two Ryobi batteries for less than the price of one DeWalt. Battery life is good for drilling, but if you are driving heavy screws or lag bolts, you better have two batteries charged before you start. On larger projects, I have had to delay finishing my work when the batteries couldn't keep up with the pace, despite having a fast charger. The good news is that more new batteries are not that expensive. However, my experience is that these batteries don't have the lifespan one would like to see. I am an avid homeowner/user and am in an apparent state of remodeling our 1950's rancher style home. About every 18 months, the Ryobi batteries seem to need to be replaced as they just won't hold a charge. In fact, my last new set have been the most disappointing.

The drill does a good job of drilling and driving. The chuck's quality is fair to good, and is subject to occasional slipping on drill bits if loaded up. I recently predrilled 2x8 headers and drove some 3/8 lag bolts with this driver. It did an OK job, but despite adequate predrilling, I still had to finish the job by hand. For the casual homeowner who is only going to be putting up the occasional shelf or picture, this is a great tool for the money. But if you are going to be really working it hard, I'd consider something with more torque. The manufacturer doesn't list torque on their website, just drill/driver speeds.

Overall this is a good product. I've beaten the crap out of it, and it still runs. However, it's grinding now during heavy work, so I'll be looking for a replacement soon.

The CIRCULAR SAW that came with the kit only sees the most occasional use. It has so little clearance that it barely makes it thru a 2x4. If you aren't going to be sizing 2x4's with a tool like this, what good is it, really? I've used it to cut off plywood panels, and it works OK, as long as you only need it for a few cuts. As other reviewers have noted, this goes thru your batteries like there is no tomorrow. If I am setting up to cut several pieces of wood for a project, this tool stays in the bag and I get out the corded tool. If you lift up from the wood even a millimeter or two, the blade's small size won't clear thru a 2x4. I would give the saw only 2 stars due to it's battery hunger and inability to cut thru a 2x4 with any clearance. You would never use this for any real miter work due to the clearance issue.

My kit also came with a detail sander and a flashlight. The FLASHLIGHT is a real star, and works great under the car with it's adjustable head and ability to stand on it's own. I rarely use the sander, prefering to use my other corded machines instead.

I bought this set to lay down some laminate in a few rooms in my house. The saw works well for that purpose but struggles going through anything even remotely thick. I used it to cut through some 1.25 inch thick stair-nosing and the battery had to be recharged after every step. However, the drill is great and is able to handle just about anything I throw at it and the battery lasts much longer in the drill. The battery contacts have begun to wear out after just 3 months of moderate to heavy usage. One battery won't charge anymore and I had to take apart the charger and use it upside down in order to get the second battery to charge.

Given such a low price for a drill, saw, two batteries, and a charger, this set is fine for small projects around the house.

"Review incomplete due to problem" 2010-02-27

I was in the middle of a project when my old drill died, which was a 3/8" Craftsman cordless. When I looked around for a comparable drill, I found that they have gotten pretty pricey. This Ryobi caught my eye. The company has a good reputation, and because I only use the drill a few times a year, I thought a reconditioned one would serve my needs. I ordered it from Amazon on Feb. 24, 2010 and it was delivered by FedX on Feb 26. Certainly prompt service, but I am in a state adjacent to Georgia where it was shipped from. I unpacked it and found that it was in a carrying case. I read the manual for the drill and charger. The manuals were new, printed for reconditioned units. I unpacked the battery, charger and drill, which had the 2nd battery attached. I tried to operate the drill but there was no response. I put the battery on the charger, and after a minute or two, the flashing light indicators indicated that the battery was defective. It would not charge. I charged the remaining battery and it charged fine. The drill then operated.

Before doing anything, I contacted CPORyobi support and the email response says they have submitted my request for a replacement battery to the factory. If I do not hear anything within 10 days, get back in touch. Consequently, me and my project are on hold. I read the fine print in CPO's return policy, and it says UNUSED items can e returned within 30 days for a refund. I am a patient guy, but my project is waiting. If I do not get a good battery within 10 days, I am going to get a refund and go to Lowes and buy a new one

This does bring up an issue I had not thought about. These units have been used, including the batteries, and you do not know how much life is left in them. New ones cost about the same as this drill, and that would double the cost of this bargain. I will update this review if and when the battery problem is resolved and I can actually try out the drill.

This is a March 10, 2010 update:

I received a replacement battery from the manufacturer today. I gave the drill a test run drilling a 1/4" inch hole in a 1/8" thick aluminum strip, and it worked fine, It is a light, nicely balanced basic drill, and should be adequate for my needs. I hope I get a few years out of it. CPO Ryobi lived up to their word.

"New model D47CK has BUBBLE level on TOP" 2010-07-17

New Ryobi model D47CK has BUBBLE level on TOP, and costs $40 at Home Depot. Mini screwdriver bits were moved to bottom of handle. HD's (SKU 839977) internet still shows model as D46CK, but the HD near me, in San Jose CA., has the new model.

I LOVEEEEEEEE this drill!

I drilled about 20(qty) 1 inch holes, with an augar, through 4 inches of hard, dried 50 years old, double 2"x4" wood, for electrical remodel. I had to set the clutch on the second to highest level, level 22. It goes to level 24. When I had it set to level 21, it would drill about 1-2 inches, then slip the clutch.

It has the power to whip your hand, and bust your knuckles if your not careful. But not as often, and not as hard(fast)as my electic corded 1/2in Porter Cable drill, which has to much power. Previoulsy more then once, the augar would stick and the my Porter Cable would whip and bust my hand, thus why I was looking for another drill. The Ryobi's clutch and variable speed gave me more control drilling in and especially out, when the augar would get stuck.

Let me say a "charged" good quality 18V or 19V battery drill, (ie., a DeWalt/Craftsman), could have done the same job. But not having to worry about the charge or buying a replacement battery is worth the $40. The other side of using corded drills, is having to run extension power cord, and making sure no one trips or accidentally unplugs, or fight the cord while your on a ladder, or etc.

The drill does get heavy after a period of time (but so do the 18v/19v battery drills). The Ryobi D47CK has good balance. Drill comes in a gray plastic carry case. The electric plug is 2 prong, no ground prong.

The "lock" button never once accidentally locked. The protected rubber ring around the D47CK's "lock" button, looks exactly the same as the internet images of the D46CK. hmmmmmm, as I review this drill, I have to ask, if different size hands, with bigger thumb knuckles, or maybe smaller thumb knuckles, or could the lenght of the hand grip, with longer or shorter knuckle location, accidentally trip the lock? I am 6ft0in tall, and would say my hands are average. Sorry for my day dreaming, but I hope it help.

I usually only use a drill to drill holes, and this one works great for that, but recently I found myself having to back out some large bolts, and I couldn't budge them by hand. I put the Phillips bit in and went at it nice and slow. Sure enough, I got them out, and without stripping the head. The variable speed feature was very helpful with this, as was the torque adjustment.

Aside from this, the drill is light, and the handle and trigger are comfortable to use. The cord is a reasonable length, and the carrying case is nice. The only thing I wish it had was a level. Given the other aspects, I'll get over this. If I feel really ambitious, I'll put one in the bit holder and just stash the bits somewhere else.

Battery advertisement was for a 7.2 volt battery which I ordered. The charger I had for my old 7.2 battery didn't fit the new battery. The ad failed to notate there were two different 7.2 batteries and two different chargers. Customer service very rude actually nasty wouldn't take back even though returns were guaranteed.

I would never do business with this company again!!!!

Great battery pack. However, be careful as there are two similiar battery packs for the Ryobi 7.2V drill which both work well and interchange just fine. The difference is the power connector at the edge of the pack. If you are looking for a replacement make sure the release tabs are the same color as the pack you are replacing or you will end up having to buy a different charger as the power interface adapter is different. If you have the base charger unit then there should be no problem.

In spite of the reviews, my wife still convinced me to buy this charger saying it was worth the risk. Wow - what a mistake. The charger did EXACTLY what all of the other customer reviews said it would to. I plugged it in and within 5 minutes it stopped working. Now I'll by a new drill after wasting money. Don't make the mistake like me and waste your money. Customer reviews are there for a reason.

This is my second one of these drills the last one I had for 6 years a long time for a cordless tool that gets used by a finish carpenter everyday. The amazing thing is how long the batteries last. Other brands of cordless tools I've had, the batteries won't hold a charge after about a year and a half. After 6 years my batteries in my old Panasonic drill are still holding a charge I tried them in my new drill when it came in and they worked fine it was the drill that finally gave up. It's alittle pricey for a 15 volt drill but I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have owned several brands of cordless drill but have never been real impressed with the torque, or battery life. This Panasonic has more torque, is smaller and more compact, and has tremendous battery life. It is now my favorite tool. I have been recommending Panasonic to my neighbors. I never did that with any of the other brands.
